The province of Latina is incredibly rich and differentiated: it offers not only the seaside villages such as Sperlonga or Gaeta, but also its hinterland is full of surprises and treasures to discover. One of them is hiding 15 km from Cisterna di Latina: these are the Gardens of Ninfa, declared a National Monument.
Surely you wonder why the gardens should be so special. Well, these are also because they arose on the ruins of Ninfa, a medieval village abandoned six hundred years ago and returned to light in the early twentieth century when Prince Gelasio Caetani decided to create the beautiful romantic garden that you can admire today.
The garden of Ninfa is an 'English garden', that is, a place where natural elements are cleverly mixed like waters, trees, flowers and bushes and architectural elements such as bridges, arches, ruins.
Thanks to the climate, the land and the work of architects, botanists and gardeners every year thousands of plants follow a peaceful life cycle. Next to the typical species for the area such as alders, willows, poplars, olive trees, oaks, orange trees, lemons, pomegranates, grow the blue “ceanothus” Californian, the great Japanese maples, boreal birches, tulip tree, sugar maple, bamboo, Chinese cherry trees, Ethiopian calla calla.
They intoxicate with their scent roses, carnations, poppies, tulips, peonies, begonias, lilacs, lavender, sage and rosemary. The river Ninfa, the streams, the lake and the varied fauna also contributes to this beauty: the kingfisher, the grey heron, the pendulum, the axle, the barn owl, the water hen, the coot, the royal german and, again, the badger, the porcine, the moscardino and the farina.
It is a real show for all the senses: hearing, touch but above all for sight and smell.
This nature paradise is open to groups accompanied by guides from April to November, on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month and on the third Sunday of April May
